Thanks Tim, no issues with gear changes so the current oil can stay at least for the next year or two.

On the subject of changing gear oils, using a good quality synthetic oil, how often would you recommend it is changed ? Bearing in mind most cars would never have had it changed before!

My 9000 gearbox oil must have been in since new, I then changed to Amsoil at about 115,000.

Hi

It really comes down to the use. Hard use and short trips will cut the life of the oil, but the Amsoil is a good oil, so I would say 30k/3 years would be being very careful. I'm sure 5 years/50k would be fine. It's a bit odd why people rarely change their gearbox oil, gearboxes aren't cheap to replace and when something basic like a semi synthetic engine oil has been used for the factory, it's worth changing the oil on a semi regular basis.

Cheers

Tim

Saab changed gearbox oil on this to MTF 0063 but is there a suitable alternative than the super expensive redline mt90 as the 0063 is half the price of redline.

You pretty much get what you pay for with oil. If you want a top end oil, I'd suggest waiting for an offer as I know the Fuchs Sintofluid has been about a tenner per litre on offer before.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim,
2000 9-5 Aero HOT, Automatic gearbox. Driving style is generally pretty relaxed.
What do you reckon?
Additionally do you think it's worth adding engine flush type compounds prior to an oil change or is this a bit like adding snake oil?
Thanks in advance,
Simon

Hi Simon

Any of these are fine

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-771-dexron-iii.aspx

The Redline D4, Amsoil ATF and Fuchs 6000 are top choices, although the rest are fine as cheaper alternatives.

No need for a flush, you won't get all of the oil out unless the gearbox is in pieces anyway, so you'd always have some of the flush left in there - not good for the box.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the speedy reply. I'd read elsewhere that using fully synthetic oil in automatic gearboxes like those used by Saab was best avoided because of the lack of a servicable filter. The suggestion was that synthetic oil had something of a cleaning effect and so could lead to dirt and other detritus being released and subsequently blocking the maze of channels which could in turn lead to terminal gearbox failure. The implication was that oil that wasn't fully synthetic had the appropriate rheological properties but wouldn't have quite such a 'dirt dislodging' effect. Is there any truth to this or is it all cobblers? I'd hate to buy the 'best' oil thinking I was doing the right thing only to find that it could actually cause harm!
Thanks in advance,
Simon

Hi Simon

What you're saying makes sense to do with detergency, but mineral and synthetic oils contain detergents, so I can't see there being a difference in regards to the way it will affect any dirt in the box. Also, if there is that much debris in an autobox, you have problems anyway. Have you got a link to where you saw that info?

I have a feeling that it might be a bit like the manual gearboxes - because Saab specced a 10w-30 mineral engine oil for a lot of those, a lot of people assume that the only thing that can be used is a 10w-30 mineral oil. When I saw the info about that, it read along the lines of 'A 10w-30 mineral oil is fine for the job' it didn't mention anything about a synthetic being unsuitable or a gear oil causing problems.

Cheers

Tim

To be fair, it did mention that synthetic engine oil was unsuitable but also recommended a Saab-branded synthetic gear oil.

Hi

You both need an MTF for the gearbox and I would go with the Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF or Fuchs Sintofluid.

I have an '07 9-5 HOT Aero manual. The gears are slightly 'sticky' especially third. I'm looking at changing the gearbox oil to see if there's any improvement. Which grade do you recommend? 70w 80 or 75w 85?

Cheers

I'd go for a 70w-80 or 75w-80 like the Fuchs Sintofluid, Redline MTL or Amsoil MTF.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your earlier reply to my question; your efforts are much appreciated. Just to let you know that your input is appreciated and that I've jut bought a load of fluids and will certainly do so again in future.
Thanks again,
Simon

Hi Tim, another one for you please :)

2003 9-5 Aero manual. Currently putting out 300+ bhp and has a Quaiffe LSD.
I have recently(ish) bought the car and I know the oil was changed when the box was rebuilt and the LSD fitted approx 23k miles ago.
I am always very particular on making sure the oil in both the engine and gearbox is changed regularly (I will do the gearbox every 10k and the engine every 3k).

So what is your recommendation please (quality is my priority)?

Thanks

Dave :)
