When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year and model in the title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Car Year - Car Model: Brief description of issue. EXAMPLE- 1999 9-3. Problems starting when hot

Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.

Threads with non-compliant titles will be moved to The Pit Lane (in which no replies can be posted, but the OP can edit the thread - upon which the thread will be released to the workshop forum)

Nb. Generic thread titles for truly generic issues that genuinely are not model or variant specific (such as "how do I change the spring in an forge wastegate actuator") are acceptable

Saab 9-3 2.8 V6 Auto. 2005 with 71,000 on the clock. Currently remapped from 250 to 275bhp. Will be remapping to 320 bhp shortly.

Driving is a mixture of stop start then more open commuting and the odd A road blast.

What oils would you recommend for the Engine & Gearbox? Quantities if known would also be great!

Hi

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic in the engine.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Castrol Edge/Magnatec, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

You need a 3309 spec ATF, like the Mobil ATF 3309, Fuchs ATF 4400, Millers Millermatic SPIII, Motul Multi ATF or Castrol Transmax Z.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-1432-atf-au ... fluid.aspx

The engine takes 5.7L. Autoboxes are tricky for capacity, the total is 7L, but I would have thought 4-5L is more likely for a service.

Cheers

Tim

Hi

You need an engine oil that meets the BMW LL01 or LL04 specification.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-685-bmw-longlife-01.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-686-bmw-longlife-04.aspx

Those oils are all good options as they need to be to meet the BMW specification, so take your pick based on any price/brand preference you have, although if it burns at lot of oil, go for one of the 5w-40s.

This is ideal for the gearbox/.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68895-fuchs ... 23614.aspx

The diff needs a 75w-90 GL5 oil.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90- ... fluid.aspx

The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Red Line 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Gulf Syngear are also good choices.

The engine takes 8L, about 7L for the gearbox and 1.5L for the diff.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim - a slightly different one for a change: 2012 Audi S4 B8 3.0 V6 supercharged engine oil.

The Audi documentation only states which VAG spec it need to comply with (and the combinations are pretty confusing tbh), not what actual oil viscosity etc is needed. What's your recommendation, for a high mileage interval service regime?

Hi

You need an oil that meets the VW504.00 spec.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-749-vw-50400-oil.aspx

The 504.00 oils are all good oils, so make your decision based on any brand/price preference you have. With the 502.00 oils, go for a 0w-30, 5w30 or 0w-40 or 5w-40.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim,

2005 9-5 Aero manual Stage 3+ (circa 300bhp/320lbft), general use, won't be tracking it.

Can you recommend a gearbox oil please, just about to have a Quaife ATB diff fitted.

Thanks!

Hi

You need a 75w-80 for the gearbox and the best proven options are the Red Line MTL or Fuchs Sintofluid. The Millers TRX 75w-80, Valvoline and Motul Motylgear are good alternatives. The Quaife ATB is fine with normal gear oil.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim,
Are you selling a suitable power steering fluid for the Saab 9-5 2005?
I read in the earlier posts that you recommended Pentosin but didn't stock it, would you recommend any others?
Thanks

Thanks Tim, all sorted, order cancelled and re-placed.

FYI the previous two times I have conducted a gearbox oil change my economy has improved by about 4mpg (15%!!)

Thanks for re-placing the order.

Good to know about the improved economy. Mine improved massively around the same time as the gear oil change, but at the same time I had a new intercooler and filters, so it was a cumulative effect.

Cheers

Tim
