Forum rules

When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year and model in the post subject/thread title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Car Year - Car Model: Brief description of issue. EXAMPLE- 1999 9-3. Problems starting when hot.

For Tech II issues or help requests please state the following in your title ''Tech 2 help required - state issue and your location ''.

Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.

Threads with non-compliant titles will be moved to The Pit Lane (in which no replies can be posted, but the OP can edit the thread - upon which the thread will be released to the workshop forum, note compliant threads will be moved back when the mod/admin team next visit the Pit Lane. if your thread has been sat in the Pit Lane for 24hrs+ after editing, pm Tech II to request release)

Nb. Generic thread titles for truly generic issues that genuinely are not model or variant specific (such as "how do I change the spring in an forge wastegate actuator") are acceptable

**The first 5 posts for new users require individual moderator approval (which they will only get it if they are in line the rules of the forum). Please be patient and allow time for that to happen, and avoid duplicate postings.**

I bought my 2005 Saab 9-3 vector early last year but after a month or so (late April/May time) when I locked the car with the remote the alarm would start going off randomly. I took it to a 'Saab Specialist' and he suggested it could be one of the remotes randomly setting off the panic alarm and I should remove the battery from one remote and just use the other and if it continues try the other way round. That proved not to be the issue as in the end I locked the car and then removed the batteries from both remotes and the alarm still went off. It gradually got worse as the weather got warmer and in the end I could only lock the car by manually pushing the button down as I shut the door as the alarm was going off as soon as I locked it with the remote. I went back to the 'Saab Specialist' and asked him to disable the audable alarm so that I could at least lock it without annoying the neighbours but he refused saying it would nullify my insurance.

Towards the end of the year I just used the remote to lock the car for some reason rather than press the button down as I shut the door and the car locked and no alarm went off, all through the winter it was fine, I could lock and unlock the car with the remote and it behaved itself. Then during the spring of this year, when the weather started warming up the issue started to return and again and now I can't use the remote to lock the car because as soon as I do the alarm goes off.

I don't have a tech2 to look into it myself, probably wouldn't know what I was looking for to be honest if I did have one, but are there any Saab owners here that have had similar issues? if so how did you fix?

You can scroll through the settings on the SID by pressing the Customize button, then twiddling and pressing the knob to get to the alarm settings. Try setting it to "Door Alarm only". If this stops it going off, you have a fault in the movement/glass break sensor in the roof console. Or, if you have an estate, one of the glass break sensors stuck to the lower corner of each of the three windows at the back (sides and tailgate) has failed.

If the alarm still goes off when you have selected "doors only", you may have a fault in one of he door locks. The switch for sensing the door is closed is in the lock. Do all the buttons go down when you press the remote?

Did your Saab Specialist look at your car with a Tech2? That will allow you to find out what caused the alarm to go off the last time it activated.

Finally, you have a mechanical door lock on the passenger side. The key is hidden inside the remote fob. If you lock the car there, the alarm won't set.

I will go and check the SID, I think I changed it to door alarm only last year but I may be wrong.

Yes, he put it on tech2 and said it was the panic alarm that was going off which is when he suggested it could be one of the remotes. I haven't been back to him this year but I might and explain it only appears to happen in the warmer weather.

OK Bit of update:

Changed alarm setting to door only and it locked fine, but as soon as I sat down indoors the alarm went off again.

I tried locking it with the key in the passangers door and it only locked the passengers door, the drivers door remained unlocked. I know also the internal 'central locking' switch inside the drivers door doesn't work so that would suggest to me, I am no mechanic in any way, that one of the door locks has an issue, could it be passenger lock as it's not sending to other door or would it be the drivers door, the car is a convertible so just the two doors. I know you can buy door modules on ebay but then I assume these then need to be reprogrammed.

I have change a door module and it worked. It was a secondhand one and have been used in another similar car.

The 9-3 doesn't use a security system, as such, for all the extras. It's more a computer reboot so that everything recognises the other items on the network and sends the right messages and those messages are looked for. If you have a new item, it will need "adding" with Tech2, but a used item may work if the original car was similar. "Removing" the old item and "adding" the new one would be safest to avoid some unexpected (& obscure?) problem in future.

You may well be right about a faulty lock, but only a Tech2 could confirm, because you can use the Tech2 to operate all the items on the network and see if they work or not.
