Forum rules

When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year and model in the post subject/thread title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Car Year - Car Model: Brief description of issue. EXAMPLE- 1999 9-3. Problems starting when hot.

Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.

Threads with non-compliant titles will be moved to The Pit Lane (in which no replies can be posted, but the OP can edit the thread - upon which the thread will be released to the workshop forum)

Nb. Generic thread titles for truly generic issues that genuinely are not model or variant specific (such as "how do I change the spring in an forge wastegate actuator") are acceptable

**The first 5 posts for new users require individual moderator approval (which they will only get it if they are in line the rules of the forum). Please be patient and allow time for that to happen, and avoid duplicate postings.**

Hi all. Trying to diagnose a strange issue on a friend's 9-5. Symptoms all occurred within a short space of time, but I guess not necessarily related.

Firstly the CEL came on. The next day (this evening) the car's battery was totally flat. We jumped the car and got it running fine. Stopped and started a few times, and no codes were recorded when I read them, so whatever triggered the CEL is unlikely to be detected at startup. However the car's alarm went off a few hours later for no reason, and the car is dead once more. The weird thing however is that there's a loud mechanical clicking noise coming from under the bonnet, somewhere towards the bulkhead. Could be a relay sound potentially, but it's happening without the key in the ignition and with a battery so dead that the central locking doesn't work.

Any ideas?

We are indeed waiting for a new battery to arrive today. My concern however is that the clicking - possibly a relay - is something operating incorrectly and draining the battery.

The clicking relay is a consequence of the low voltage. Put the battery on and I expect all will be fine.

You can also measure the amp draw when the engine is off to see if something is draining the battery if you like
