I am trying to adjust the timing chain guide on my 99 (1980 T) to cure a chain rattle which seems to start when the car is warm, at around 2000rpm or so. The guides are in good condition and the chain and tensioner are new, so I can only think that the chain guide needs adjusting a little. This is covered in an official service note from Saab (thanks Dave B!), so hope that it will do the trick.

The problem is that my 13mm swan neck spanner gets a good hold of the bolt but is not long enough to get any kind of leverage. There is only half an inch or so of spanner sticking out of the timing chain casing to get hold of.

I have done a search on ebay/google and cannot seem to find a long reach swan neck spanner? Has anyone else on here done this adjustment and if so what tools did you use? Is there a saab tool for this job?

Any help gratefully received!

Cheers, Andy.

Can you not just slide a length of pipe / tube over your existing spanner?

First question, isn't it 1/2" not 13mm?

That aside, we've used a long offset double ring like this one:

Slacken off the tensioner, just a little, then knock it tight with a long knock-thru screwdriver and retighten. Assuming it's not so worn as to be beyond "percussion engineering" adjustment.

A hammer! You'll be able to get a lever between the tensioner/slipper and the head, lever tightesh and reitighten the bolt whilst holding the lever.

Could someone send me a copy of the service note AndyH is talking about so I can put it up online where I shared out the workshop manuals ?
