I'm pretty sure that this may have been covered in a previous thread, but I've struggled to find it in a search. Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice or experience others may have.
Looking for the best gearbox oil to use in the stage rally car, running a plate diff, and I'm going to be using an oil cooler to try and keep the temp down, which seems an important factor in keeping these boxes running smoothly.

In the V4 I have run either Castrol B373 LSD oil or Valvoline with no problems.

I use this in all the gearboxes on the 99 / 90 / 900 range. Particularly good on high performance boxes.

Just make sure you fill up the primary case with oil, especially if the box is 'dry'.

You have to watch full synthetic on lsd's they can change the slip of the clutch plates. I would stick to a motorsport lsd oil designed to work with the plate diff.
The castrol use to be half the price that it is now, so was a bit of a bargin, then someone noticed.

Very interesting, thanks for that. When you're talking about filling the primary casing, I assume you are talking about pouring a pint into the casing through the clutch shaft metal cover plate?
Thinking of going nice and traditional with the engine oil, always used Millers CFS in rally cars, but in the older Saab engine I think fully synthetic might not be the best idea, bearing in mind I change after every event, anyone for Castrol GTX?

I would seriously consider using a high quality fully synthetic gear oil such as Amsoil, most of their oils have LSD additives already in the oil, you can even add more of their LSD additive if the plates still chatter, but i have had no experience of this.
Synthetic oils have a higher thermal stability than mineral oils, a mineral oil will start to oxidise around 110*C ish, were as a synthetic won't start 'till around 150-160*C. A C99/900 gearbox needs all the help it can get when driven hard for sustained periods.

And synthetic in your engine too. Is it a turbo or NA? If a turbo then DEFINITELY use synthetic. If NA, I would still suggest you do.

If the oil is getting that hot you want to dump it after each event. I remember the castrol film in the 70's with one of the funny car teams. Castrols labs worked out that one run down the runway was about the same as 1 year of normal driving in a road car!
In the v4 my gearbox oil is usually changed after 5 events and the engine oil after 3.
Run something that is made for comp and LSD's.
