Having been sent the photos (see previous posts), I popped over to Jamsaab this afternoon to collect my tax disc for a refund and must say the quality of work and attention to detail Martin has done is first class. I am more than pleased

Be careful with that promise of a ride as Rhys will probably want to drive it. He has been driving at the U17 car club for nearly a year now and is better than driving test standard already. On Nov 6th he will be driving Post Office artic lorries at Long Marston.

long marston,that takes me back,my dad was race director at santa pod back in the 70's and 80's and marston was one of the tracks we visited to drag race,also nice to hear of a youngster taking an interest in driving,it was thanks to the open spaces of a desserted santa pod that i was driving what ever i could lay my hands on,by 12 years old i was driving my dads escort van on my own,went for my first "road" drive at 1 min past midnight on my 17th birthday with my mum in the passenger seat and passed my test 2 months later with no driving lessons,as a young lad i use to sit in the rear nearside seat so i could study my mum and dads driving to understand what you do to drive a car,sad but true.

Whilst Jamsaab have been busy doing the important stuff I have continued tinkering in my garage..........

I did try a 'chrome' spray from Halfords to try and get a shine but to be honest it was a waste of money - it looks like an ordinary matt silver finish. So I have removed the paint, sanded the strips and polished it back to a shine.


Complete grille cleaned, resprayed (very fiddly masking required) and original SAAB badge replaced with a better quality version.


Different quality of SAAB badge? A close up of the alternative badge - it has a better finish and is in a heavier material.


Headlamps before and after cleaning. These were galvanised by Jamsaab ten years ago, when the engine bay was detailed. It is a credit to their standard of work that along with the engine bay, they have stood the test of time so only really needed a good clean and glass lens polished. The 'before' headlamp lens has a stonechip crack so will be replaced.

As Nutcase says why downgrade.
The four speed box is stronger and at 70mph the difference compared with five speed is only around 200-250rpm.


Garfield. No The car is totally original and as it left the factory with nothing added or taken away and over the years Jamsaab, who maintain the car, have always fitted original parts. Granted it is 'only' 145bhp/177lbs torque but that is fine for me as it will happily cruise at 100+, accelerate from 50 with gusto and handles well, especially around the twisty bits

Drivers seat clean.
Surprisingly grubby seat bolster came up well after a clean with 1001.
The seat frame and plastics will also be cleaned, as will the remaining seats, ready for re-fitting.

Repainted window winders.
TIP: If your winders rattle then cut a 2-3mm slice of domestic pipe insulation and sit it between the winder and the door card. As shown below.

Loving the work here Dave (and Martin of course).
Like others I can hardly believe your car needs a 'restoration' but can see why you are doing it, and I'm sure it will be worth it. Hope to see it out and about again in the future.

Like the idea of the insulation for the backing ring for window winders. I used a similar style idea for the rocker box screws/ washers, only used thin slices of the 6mm vac hose. It seems to hold, but the car hasnt moved out of the garage yet. !!!

I saw the work in progress "first hand" when I dropped in to see Martin/Jamsaab last Monday (he fitted a "short-shifter" gearchange to my c900 'vert in about 5 minutes flat - every late-model c900 should have one - it makes an amazing difference to the feel and action of the gearchange).

The work being done on David D's 99T is outstanding - painstaking and thorough - and you won't be able to spot the joins when it's been refinished .

I also spotted my old 99T 3-dr there - awaiting Martin's attention - good on you, David W, for restoring another of these lovely cars.

I had a good look around this morning, too. Excellent work, and very impressive.

Rear bumper

Thirty plus years was beginning to show on the fixing plates.



So I decided to take it apart and give it a clean. Here are the rubber and plastic components that make up the bumper.



And here are the metal components - not the ladder and washing airer ;D

Cleaned, painted and refitted



New trim insert (6mm) though the profile is not identical, they slide straight in.



99T bumper inserts have small fixing clips at the each end. They usually go missing but fortunately mine were still there, they were
however in poor condition, so I looked around for something with the same profile. The edge of the butter lid was ideal .
So using some chrome 3M self adhesive and superglue I made up replacements.



and when fitted they looked the part.
