I'm in the middle of this job so that I can extract the gearbox which is whining more than a backbench MP.

I've got almost everything disconnected/undone.
The only thing stopping me getting the engine out is the oil dipstick tube; its preventing me from withdrawing the horizontal engine mount bolt on the nearside.

So, how does one remove it?
Does it just pull off?
Is it screwed in?

I'm hoping to get the engine & box out tomorrow morning so suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA S

ENGINE DIPSTICK TUBE IS SCREWED INTO THE GEARBOX.SOMETIMES IT CAN BE IN RATHER TIGHT,SO A GOOD QUALITY PAIR OF MOLE GRIPS MAY BE REQUIRED TO LOOSEN,IF THE CORRECT SIZE SPANNER IS NOT AVAILABLE.
BUT BE AWARE,THE BLACK PLASTIC TUBE 'ADAPTS' A SHAPE AKIN TO A 'BANANA' AFTER ALL THESE YEARS,SO TRYING TO RE-THREAD/REFIT IN THE CAR,CAN BE DIFFICULT,OR INDEED CAN CRACK THE BLACK PLASTIC TUBING,ESPECIALLY IN COLD WEATHER.

BE SURE TO COLLECT THE LARGE COPPER WASHER,WHEN REMOVING.

Dip stick tube will NOT need to be removed to get the bolt out.
Unclip it from the bracket on the inlet manifold and then you can rotate the tube by hand as it will spin on the fitting that is screwed into the box.

Thankyou gents.

Its out now.

I tried spinning the dipstick tube around so that the bend in it would move it away from the path of the engine mount bolt, as Martin suggets, but it wouldn't move far enough out of the way.

A wipe with a babywipe and a scrape around with a flatblade screwdriver revealed the hex-head bolt fitting at the bottom of the dipstick tube. A 28mm spanner fits as long as there is enough room to turn it (so I had to remove the airbox and trunking which I was trying to avoid). Once cracked off the dipstick tube wound out by hand and was removed, as Birdie suggests. Access to the NS engine mount bolt was then acheived, the bolt was removed and the engine & gearbox lifted out.

The gearbox has been split from the engine, the replacement has been cleaned and is ready and then it was time to stop for dinner.

Many thanks again.

Thankyou. It was!

Its great when you get really stuck into a job, you make progress and it goes reasonably well.
