I've just stripped the engine on my 99 ( burning oil at high speed, genuine 70k miles mainly on short trips wth 10+ years standing ), Condition isn't too bad, crank isn't damaged and while the shells are down to the copper on the thrust side the crank is nice and smooth, Bores looks ok with no lip, so looks like I can put new shells and rings in it.

The question I have is what to do about the water pump - based on your own experience and the 70k mileage should I leave well alone or strip and replace the bearing and seals ?

I'd leave it until it needs doing, since it can be repaired with the engine in the car.

I'd agree with that. It can be a bit of a pain to remove but it's just the same job whether it's in the car or not.

My water pump is now over 41 years old and is still working well. When it starts to leak, I'll get it sorted.
