Hi all,

Question as above, yes, I know this topic has been widely discussed before, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
Mine needs a slight top up (no leak to be found, so not emergency)
The stuff in the car appears to be a golden colour when tested on kitchen roll.
It's possibly the original stuff ?
The book says I should use Texaco 4634, but I know this is no longer available.
I may have found an alternative advertised on the web, described as being correct for my car, the advert says it's SAAB 93160548.
Does anyone know if this is compatible with whats already in my car ?
I realise I could ask the seller, but he might simply want to make a sale, correct or not.

Many thanks
Steve.

The part number 93160548 is the fluid for 1998> cars. If you're buying the fluid from an Orio reseller (usually ex-Saab dealers/workshops) you will get this fluid since the old one has been discontinued (just as you mentioned). Since there is no straight alternative i were forced to use this last summer, did a complete flush and drove all summer without any issues.

I had zero leaks and issues before i swapped for the "new" fluid and yet no leaks or issues with the new fluid, time will tell i guess.

Car is currently off the road (daily driver on summer only), back on the road again the 1st of april.

The new 93160548 fluid is green, the fluid in your car currently at least has the correct color for the old (now discontinued) fluid but of course impossible to tell what the previous owners have used.

90350342 has been discontinued and replaced by 93165414, which is Dexron VI transmission fluid. That is interesting because I have used Dexron VI in both my 9000s and it gives a similar steering feel to the original Saab fluid (same as for the C900). It seems the green stuff, 93160548, is a bit more viscous than the original fluid and in my experience that means the steering will be too light and lack feel. I've also had two C900 steering racks blow their seals while using Dexron II (again, thicker than the original fluid) and I don't know whether that was coincidence or not.

Or you could use the original Saab fluid if you know who still has stock

Heavily sucking through teeth there mart I bet...lol :D

(I was told by western power steering Hanham Bristol that any PSF or ATF could be used in a c900 and it would be fine and he and his wife ran c900’s for many years back In the day) ?

Hi Shane
You are correct, BUT atf does make the steering feel different to the correct Saab fluid.

BTW have you got that chubby axle fitted yet :D
