Car Model: Still looking!
Hi.

After a break from Saabs I'm thinking of getting another. This; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1975-Saab-96- ... Ciid%253A1 has been on Ebay for a while, and looks quite nice, but as its a long way from me, I wondered if anyone on here had been to see it, or knew the car???

Thanks in advance.
Drew.

Drew there are much nicer, more original examples out there that have not been messed about with by some kid for half the price. Front grill totally sprayed in silver, half the heater box painted in white and peeling, aerial and hole drilled into a crazy place in front of boot, red wheels painted black and peeling, no beeding on front wings or slam panel, rust showing along bottom of side panels under some stupid stuck on strip, and look at the state of the steering wheel which seems to be one of the few things not daubed in paint, he probably had some aftermarket wheel on now replaced by the original. The boy has had his fun with it and it is all starting to come through again so he wants to move it on, no problem BUT no where near that price. For that price you want a VERY nice model and pictures showing how good the usual rust areas are!!

This has been on the market for a long time, there is a reason for that! Nice ones go quickly and others keep coming back up as they get sold theoretically because people bid on pictures alone until they see it in the flesh and reject it after realising what the reality of a shiny image can be.

Keep looking a nice one will come along but better still put up a wanted advert with the budget you have in mind and leave your number with some 96 specialists. You should find a known nice one within a year 8)

Thank you so much for the reply. I thought that may be the case, as photos and eBay often flatter! I'm looking at a couple of others on Car & Classic which look more original. I don't mind mods, providing they're done well, and are in keeping with the car.
Once again thanks for the honest appraisal, and saving me a 500 mile+ wasted round trip.
Regards.
Drew.

There's quite a nice green 95 V4 on eBay at the mo. It's near me in Pembrokeshire. I don't know how far away from you that is.

Thanks, just spotted that.

I've been looking at a couple on Car & Classic, ones a 95 estate, in red. The other, which would be top of my budget (ok, slightly over!) is a green 96, down in Sussex, but it does look lovely!

Not sure you can read pm,s with only 3 posts, think you need 5 but when you can I can give you some inside info on one you mention ( shennanigans) and advice on the other. Also look at past for sale posts on the SAAB 96V4 forum, the pricey green one in Sussex has been talked about a fair while ago!!! And I agree with the comments. Agree with Madwelshman that green 95 does look decent but you cannot tell without getting underneath, especially on a 95! Somebody will have already looked at it as it has been up for a while now, call around, it may save you a long drive.

You sound to have a healthy budget, you can get a really nice orignal one that hasn,t been messed about with for that. Be patient, known nice ones tend to come up through 'word of mouth', put yourself out there through the club contacts, 96 specialists etc, something will come up. If buying from an advert be very careful as there are some expensive tarted up rust boxes out there. I know two people who were in your position within the last two years who have bought expensive 96's purported to be in rust free tip top condition and have had to have major welding done. One in particular was shocking sold by a past forum member who repeadtedly claimed it had never had any welding and never needed it

Hi Drew can only re-iterate what Zagato has said. 95s and 96s can both appear reasonably sound and have rust lurking. Any corner or where wings join or the floor pan across the bulkhead/engine bay/ passenger compartment can all rust. The good news is the structure of the v4 s is strong. There are people on here who would look with you if it was near them and a second opinion is always worth it. Happy hunting!

Thanks once again guys for all the help/info. Zagato, I will definitely pm you once I can!

We walked away from a 95 about 12-18months ago that we saw by chance that was fairly local to us (Birmingham) looked lovely, very pretty in a navy colour, spot lights etc, but once underneath, and under the carpets inside, it didn't quite add up!

My own v4 will most likely be up for sale imminently, it has comprehensive history and 45000 miles, it is quite exceptional in my opinion ,feel free to call me if you would like more information 07958 156709 or send a message

You can *read* PMs from 0 posts. You can only *write* PMs after 5 posts. So you could send him the info but he wouldn't be able to PM you a reply until he has 5 posts.

Hi Drew
I may also have a V4 96 for sale in the coming weeks. Its in regular use,an honest car, needs a bit of tidying but bar the door bottoms it's very presentable.
It would be a great running project as I have lots of spare parts, new and used, tools, manuals and a choice of 1.7 big valve or regular engine.
I don't want to break any forum rules so will post it in the appropriate section when I get a chance to take pictures and do a list of the spares.
The car is in Ireland but can go back onto UK plates FOC as it was imported from UK originally.

I've only had my 96V4 about 10 days now Drew, so I don't yet feel qualified to offer too much advice. All I will say is 'Good things come to he who waits'. There will be one out there that meets your needs, and there are people on this forum who are only too happy to help you
