Hmm, bit of a basket case but fixable.

I didn't think that Sonett's came with anything other than plain seats.

Ha!

That marquee in the background of the last pics.

We put one up today for a mad old woman and within an hour and a torrential hailstorm it had collapsed, buckled and broken.

Car looks as crusty as a crusty old thing, but still strangely seductive.

Wouldn,t touch that with a barge pole. Probably cost the buyer £500 plus a tad over £1000 to import. Huge amount of work to get that back on the road, I.e. GRP, underbody and mechanically and it is at £2500 already  Far better to import one yourself in road running, nicer condition for not much more from America, roughly 2-5K. Check out the SAAB Sonett owners club site in America, they don't, have a mad UK price premium on them and there are quite a few hanging around.

So how much to buy and import a good one, maybe not a fresh resto but one that's good to go for a good few years?

USA Sonett prices have been rising lately. Road going cars are currently fetching $5000 - $8000.

Agree with Zagato on this one, the floor pan looks bad so that front bulkhead seam must be suspect, fixable if you are good at welding and have the time but £2K would be a maximum on this to my mind - plus there are bits missing which will be difficult to source. This one must have come from the northern or eastern states to be so rusty. As for the seat covers I'm not sure that's original at all - but maybe I'm wrong?!

I got mine from California in the early '90's and there was no rust on it whatsoever. So a Californian car would be preferable and as most were imported into California that is where to concentrate on looking. I paid £1000 to have mine imported but as that was the last century  I guess it will be about twice that now. If anybody is interested I can itemise that (it included road transport from Santa Rosa, north of San Francisco to Los Angeles) but you must take into account taxes including the dreaded VAT which gets charged on top of the import duty and there was even a fee for the crane taking it off the ship! Typically you can get 2 cars (or even 3 depending on their size obviously!) in a container so if you can ship more than one or share a container then the costs would reduce.

I was holidaying in California a few years ago and came across 3 Sonetts on Craigs list not far from where we were staying and the guy just wanted shot of them. Two were salvageable but one was a basket case but would have done for spares. He wanted $10,000 for the lot (probably would have taken less) and even including shipping I reckon it would have been worth it as 2 could be made good and be worth at least £7 to £8K each but as usual I didn't have the capital to cover the shipping never mind the purchase price.

Anyway happy to help with my past experience if anybody is serious about importing one, would be good to get some more over here. Must be time for another Sonett gathering, it's sometime since we had one at Old Warden where we managed 6 together I think!

With a bit of carpentry they can get up to four vehicles in one container, depending on size. Three is more common though.

This is how my El Camino arrived, hidden under two substantial trucks!!

The joy of dealing with a structurally sound classic can't be under-estimated. I would definitely consider importing again, whatever the make.

I bought the Elk from Jim at Rock and Roll Motors in Grangemouth, and whilst Saabs aren't his thing I guess he might be persuaded to import anything from California provided it benefited all involved. Certainly I found him to be a true gent and absolutely honest and straight-forward to deal with.

That sounds like an idea. 'Though mine is currently off the road 'til I get the wipers working.

We had three together at the Bury St Edmunds meeting in June.

This is an interesting channel for the Sonett and Saabs in general.

Went for £3433 in the finish. I wish the new owner luck and hope it can be made into a good car again.

Maybe we can strive for double figures of Sonetts at the next meet whenever and wherever that may be!

A pretty good price for the seller, buyer has a bit of work to do.

It's not looking good. As I said above, mine is off the road 'til I get time to sort the wipers out and Andy (the other white Sonett above,) is having gearbox problems.

Discovered an empty clutch reservoir in mine the other day, hopefully just a perished seal topped up for the moment to see how quickly the fluid disappears.
