Hi I've been having this problem for a while, I'm trying to sort a friends classic 900i that refuses to start.

New petrol, plugs & leads, disi cap, rotor arm, coil and ignition amplifier have been fitted. Earth points have been checked.

The car will reluctantly start but it won't idle, also I have now noticed that the rev counter is not working, could this be linked?

All help appreciated.

The Gas Man.

Is it a 16-valve between 1989 and 1992?

It's a 1986 8v.

8-valve has K-Jet injection. If you're happy the ignition is working properly then the easiest thing to check for next is air leaks around the breathers and even that the oil filler cap is sealing tightly. Other than that you 'll need the opinion of someone here who knows more about K-Jet than I do (and there are a fair few of those).

I'm fairly sure the rev counter is not connected to the fuel system. If it is related to the starting problem then the fault would be an ignition problem.

Rev counter is driven by the ignition amplifier I think, as I had one which when replaced dropped the rev counter to zero at 4000rpm, even though the car carried on accelerating
