I bought a 900 about ten days ago. All seems to be fine but I have an intermittent 'Check Engine' light illuminated. I took the car to WMSS today and they gave it a full service. I mentioned the light to them and I assumed they'd looked into it. The car was given a clean bill of health and me a large bill and on the way home the light came on and went off then came on and stayed on. Very annoying!

They say the engine has no issues.

Hi there, do you know what systems your car is fitted with? If it's the Bosch LH 2.4 or 2.4.2 fuel injection system, it can be interrogated by earthing the correct pin on the connector usually hidden under the back seat. This will cause the check engine light to flash with the stored fault codes, hopefully leading you to the problem. I have the test documents here if you want them emailed.

If it's the car in his profile (he doesn't say) then it's a 1992 900i and that will be LH.

I am investigating the very same problem with my scruffy 900i,1991. My check engine light has been on and off for the last 9 months since I bought the car,it's had a new lambda sensor which cured it for about a month,a new throttle position sensor which cured the running problem but the light stayed on,we then earthed the lambda sensor separately and that made no difference either. It is currently at my local specialist for MOT and he is going to use the car as his daily driver and carry his diagnostic tool with him and plug it in as soon as the light comes on again as it's so random, sometimes it stays on for 5 seconds then another time it stays on for 5 days! I just drive it whatever, the emissions are ok as is the fuel consumption. I will update the results accordingly.

Sounds like we both have the same issue. I was out again this morning and its stayed off the whole time and then I stopped to get some fuel and it came on briefly and then off again. I have read elsewhere that fuel caps and connected systems are a prime suspect in this. Be interesting to know how you get on so please update.

Determined to fix!

Just checked with WMSS - there were no fault codes logged.

Car Model: OLD SAABS....NUMEROUS
VERY LIKELY A FAULTY 'AMM'....(AIR MASS METER)

ACQUIRE A SPARE,AND SWAP TO SEE IF IT ALTERS THE 'FAULT' PATTERN,IN DIVERSE DRIVING CONDITIONS.....?

ENSURE WHEN YOU GET A SPARE ONE,THE 'EXACT' PART NUMBER AS THE ORIGINAL....WHICH WILL BE STAMPED/PRINTED ON A LABEL ON THE 'AMM' ITSELF. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO SWAP,BETWEEN VARIOUS PART NUMBER'S,IT WILL 'FRY' THE 'AMM' INSTANTLY !!

CEL light on 900'i is often crank position sensor, if it flashes on and off, as had one play up on one a few years back then it died on me, but would fire up when cold but once warm it spluttered like a pig, replacement sorted it.
I have an LPT at the moment, and had it three + years, the P/O said it comes on and goes off, so I thought I can soon sort that. 3= years I still have it. it only usually comes on if I'm stuck at traffic lights or in slow moviung traffic, but give it a blip on the throttle evry few secs and usually keeps away. I tried replacement ECU amm O2 sensor charcoal canister, and it still happens, it doesn't alter the running of the car, but obviously something is not 100%, but if I switch the car off for ten secs the ecu resets and off I go. Occasionally if I have parked up and then restarted after 10 m ins it will pop straight on, turn ign off and restart gone. changed plugs leads etc, it never changed what happens, I presume it's prob too much fuel on tickover slow speeds, but with having changed all the bits, it still did the same. I have recently bought a brand new AMM as got a turbo as well, so will try that and see if it helps.

Sounds potentially like a problem that has no cure. What are the thoughts on taking out the light completely!

Never going to take it seriously when it comes on so what is the point in having it?

I collected mine from the Saab specialist today and was informed that the oxygen (lambda) sensor we fitted earlier this year is failing intermittently and causing the check engine light to malfunction so I need to source another one,Bosch if possible. Of course on the drive home of about 15 miles it never came on at all!

That's interesting. I think there are various types available and I'm assuming various qualities so it's a question of finding the right one. Which type did you fit?

Yes,my specialists, who are both ex Saab City technicians and have maintained this era of cars from new, used appropriate diagnostic tools and they were plugged into the socket under the rear seat. They also cleaned and made good all connections relating to the problem and came to the conclusion that I gave in my earlier post. I am now looking for a Bosch sensor 02580003957.

I had the same problem with my c900S (LPT with Lucas system) & I tend to agree with Birdie's diagnosis. My Indie cleaned up the AMM connector & it was fine for months. Last summer, heading for Dover after months of over-winter storage in a damp garage, it conked out completely when accelerating off a roundabout. I pulled the plug off the AMM, cleaned it & gave it a squirt of magic juice. No more problems! It's done well over 1k since without missing a beat. I bought a spare AMM just in case but it's still in its box!

I have found a definite correlation between the light playing up and the level of fuel in the tank. My tank gauge is reading just over half when the tank is actually empty which is a pain but when it gets close to an indicated reserve I seem to have more issues with the light coming on.
