My battery is poorly - battery acid coming out of the top-up ports and as flat as a pancake. The gadgety thingy I has says - internal cell problem and alternator (read dynamo) out of normal range. Any ideas what the route cause could be? This brings with it another challenge - where to find a battery that is max 200m high (incl. terminals), no wider than 150mm (so it fits in the spot next the rad) with a rating of 45Ahr? Halfords have such a thing but its only 38Ahr.

Usually nothing more than age..they are a small, cheap made battery so expect not much more than 3 years from it..they hate being stored and they hate the fast charge/drop you get with a generator.
It's when they blow and become barrel shaped that you really need to start worrying..been there when I had a faulty voltage regulator...I closed the bonnet and walked away with fingers crossed. By the time it had cooled down it had taken the shape of the hole it passes through (bullnose). so had to be "persuaded" out. I posted pics on here when it happened but can't find them at the moment.

The Bosch silver battery that was fitted to my 99T at purchase (many years ago) & then transferred to my 96-2T finally gave up the ghost at about 14+ years old! Replaced with a modern Bosch from Europarts at very reasonable cost - no more issues.

Voltage regulator could be suspect. Is there a procedure to test it? I have another theory - when I bought the car the ammeter had been wired out so I wired it back in - from the wiring diagram I can't tell why that would cause an issue but it is the only thing that has changed- any thoughts?
