UPDATE: CHANGE OF DATE TO SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 12

Advance notice that I'll be running another "Heather Hop" event this autumn, in and around the North York Moors national park. As per the last event a couple of years ago it is intended for two stroke and V4 engined Saabs, but other old and interesting stuff may be permitted upon request.

The event is an informal run along (mostly!) quiet roads, taking in some of the most stunning scenery the area has to offer and with a few choice stops along the way.

Full route details are yet to be finalised (I need to get out and do some recces!) but the starting point will be in the Pickering area, so easy to access for the majority of people travelling from the South and West. It will either end at Sutton Bank, or may end up as a circular route this time. Current ideas are to take in Dalby Forest, the Hole of Horcum, Cropton Forest, Rosedale, Blakey Rigg and possibly Wass Forest via Helmsley, the theme being old RAC rally stages that our "Jelly Mould" Saabs were so successful in tackling.

As relatively few stayed on for the meal after the event last time, I won't plan another but if there is enough interest I will arrange a suitable lunch halt where we can all get together and talk about noisy balance shaft bearings, leaking valve stem seals, and why stroker owners don’t get to enjoy any of that fun!

Further details will be published in the Saab Driver magazine. Get in touch via this site or email me: registers@saabclub.co.uk :D

Making some progress on sorting the route...

2010 is the 50th Anniversary of both the Saab 96 and Erik Carlsson's first RAC rally win. He went on to get a hat-trick in 60, 61 and 62. On that basis there is an RAC theme to the event this year, taking in the locations of some of the famous former RAC forest stages that the current "Rally GB" tour of South Wales misses out...

This year's start will be the Forest & Vale hotel in Pickering, which is run by another SOC member who has kindly offered us some space in their car park to meet up. Starting time will be 10.00 on Sunday 12th.

Run will take in Dalby Forest, Cropton Forest...the New Inn at Cropton is home to a very fine microbrewery, and serves refreshments all day. We'll then head up over the famous Saltersgate road past the Hole of Horcum

Returning across some smaller roads over the Moors to Helmsley where there are plenty of tea rooms, pubs and restaurants and ending at Byland Abbey via Wass Forest.

The Byland Abbey Inn serves excellent food and is a great place to stop for a meal before you return home. I am deliberately not organising any catering this year as last time we had quite a few drop out. Informality is the key to this event!

Date changed to avoid the clash with the SE gathering in Lancashire.

Time for a list then!

OK guys, not much interest from UKSaabers, though enough SOC people have got in touch to make it a go-er. We're also going to combine this event with an SOC Ebor branch run on the same day, so there will be quite a few modern Saabs on the run as well...including one of mine as the 96 just won't be ready.

Only a couple of weeks to go, route almost sorted now, it's going to be a good one. Put your names down please!

Cheers
Al

Start time & location confirmed:

10.30, from the car park of the Forest & Vale Hotel in Pickering.
The Best Western Forest & Vale Hotel
Malton Road
Pickering
North Yorkshire
YO18 7DL

Easy to find, just drive into Pickering from Malton on the A169 and it's on your left just before the roundabout.

Many thanks to SOC member Steve Connelly for allowing us to use his car park as the start to the run 8)
