I used to work at a company that produced software and hardware for mobile phone manufacturers. Every employee had a company phone that had the company's technology in it. My company O2 X1 stayed in my desk drawer all the time I worked there. Some of the sales guys had Blackberries because we had provided the GSM protocol stack for them. A phone with a full QWERTY keyboard looked daft to me and very OTT for a phone.
However, some years later I did buy a Blackberry Pearl, which was a nice, compact little phone. I managed to get O2 to add Blackberry services to my SIM-only contract, despite them saying it wasn't something they offered, by telling them I could get it from Vodafone instead.

I know some people pay over £1000 for a phone and I just can't comprehend that. I do appreciate the benefits of a smartphone but I paid (I think) around £120 for mine and it does all I need. I understand that people want different things from a smartphone, though.

I currently use an iPhone 6, the 12 has just been announced, which I bought used a year or so back. The only reason I might upgrade is to have room for the entire content of my 160 GB iPod. I don’t need the camera, I have a pair of Nikon D4 bodies and top of the range lenses for that, and other than storage my current phone does all I want. I certainly wouldn’t want to spend £400 on a phone.
