....despite having been in the same situation in the past, in fact it becomes even harder.

Today we had to make one of the hardest decisions any pet owner has to make, we had to say goodbye to Ollie (Lol Lol).

He was admitted to the pet hospital on Tuesday after being unwell for the past few weeks. Although tests were inconclusive the consensus of the vets treating him was that it was cancer. We could have waited for results of a biopsy to confirm, but we could not bear to see him distressed and suffering any longer. He had not eaten anything for the past 7 days and had only eaten sparely for two weeks prior to that as he had trouble keeping anything down. He had been on a drip and pain killers since admission to the pet hospital.

We had an hour with him cuddling each of us in turn before he was put to sleep in my arms. Ollie will be cremated and his ashes will be split between his favourite bush in the garden and his favourite beach in Cornwall (Ollie loved the beach but not the water). That way we will know he will still be with us at home and in his and our ''Happy Place''.

Ted his pal is somewhat subdued & confused as they have been inseparable for the past four and a half years. RiP Lol lol.

My thoughts are with you and yours.
Had to do the same recently with our Golden Retriever.
I know it hurts now, but be sure it was the right decision.

You did the bravest and kindest thing a pet owner could do and if he could I'm sure Ollie would thank you for it.
Try not to feel bad and remember the happy times you gave each other.

Seriously gutted for you Mal. Thinking of you as this brings back memories of my time at the vets with our Calley. I'm tearing up for you, Ollie, and Calley again.

It doesn’t get easier, you’re right. Gone through it too many times in the past, but take comfort that you gave him a good life and did everything you could at the end.

Sorry to hear this. So sad. Must be upsetting for Ted as well. What beach was Ollie favourite?

Perranporth.
He loved sniffing around the rocks along with greeting & playing with other dogs and chasing Ted.

More recently Gwithian was also a favourite for the same reasons. But he/we have been visiting dog friendly Perranporth every year since we adopted him.

Sorry you have had such a bad week. We all know how hard it is to lose a pet perhaps especially a dog. I hope you can take some comfort from knowing that he had a good life with you and that you did what was best at the end.

My sympathies. Upsetting though it is, with humans at least you do not normally have to make the decision. I found it very difficult with my dog years ago.

Dogs give you some of the best days of your life: and one of the worst. It's over 21 years since Gemma went, aged 17 1/2, and I still think of her every day.
It may seem like your heart is breaking, but that's just him burrowing in to stay there permanently. I love the comment "(Ollie loved the beach but not the water)" LOL Sounds like he was a right character!

Sorry to hear about Ollie and sorry for your loss. We love Perranporth beach too and I shall think about him (and you) next time I am there. I hope Ted is okay? As humans we understand our loss, but we can never understand exactly what an animal goes through when they lose a friend.

Argh, really sorry to hear you lost a member of your family. We have had our first ever dog for 5 years now and I can't imagine how you feel when the inevitable time comes.
Looks like he had a fabulous loving doggolife.

Thank you for all the kind words and condolences here and elsewhere.

I do not mind admitting losing Ollie has really knocked us and especially me for six. We love and have loved all the dogs that have given us the pleasure of their company, but Ollie just had that something that made you love him that little bit more. As Ollie & Teds groomer said when I let her know, ''The Boys'' (as she called them) are both lovely, but Ollie was special.

There have been a lot of tears over the past couple of days, but also lots of smiles when reminiscing. There is no more gentle snoring by my side on the sofa, no more watching my every move when the cheese is taken out of the fridge, or a gentle paw on my arm to remind me that the last piece of the banana I was eating was his. Walks seem shorter as Ollie liked to stop and sniff just about everything. I miss my feet being licked, I miss his enthusiastic greeting when I walk through the front door, even if I had only been out for a short while. But most of all I miss those cuddles, Ollie loved his cuddles as did I and I'm just grateful that I was there to cuddle him when he went.

Ted still keeps looking for him and obviously misses him just as much as we do. He now has Ollie's special cushion in his bed. Ollie used to sleep on top of it, Ted now rests his head on it.

There is no doubt the pain will eventually heal, but Ollie will never be forgotten. There are too many happy memories for that to ever happen.

I suspect Ollie has not yet reached where he is going to as he will be stopping to sniff at everything on route. But when he does get there, can someone please give him a cuddle until I get there to take over.

Difficult time but console yourself that you gave him the best life he could ever have had, right to the end.

We lost one of our dogs last year aged 12 yrs, our other dog had been with him for 11 years. The remaining dog had just been through 2 crutiate operations and was starting to look his age. It didn't seem fair on him to introduce a new pup at his age/condition and we also had reservations. Ultimately our remaining dog seemed quite miserable so after 6 months we introduced a new pup. They're now best buddies and the older dog has now become even more playful with the new pup than he ever was before - he acts like a young dog now which he never did before. We'll never forget the dog we lost but he'd be very happy that we found such a good pal to look after his old friend.

I'm dreading the day when this happens with our dog. I never even wanted a dog but she's my most trusted confidante.
